LASIK patients who are under the age of 40 often enjoy clear vision at a distance and up close.

However, patients over 40 who have LASIK to improve their distance vision will need reading glasses to see things up close. This true for everyone over 40.

Monovision is a compromise that many individuals over 40 choose in which one eye is fully corrected for distance, while the other eye is corrected for up close.

In summary, for those over 40:

Without mononvision: both eyes see clearly at a distance and reading glasses are needed for up close.

With monovision: One eye sees clearly at a distance (and blurry up close), while the other eye sees clearly up close (and blurry at a distance).

While the monovision compromise may not sound too appealing, in actuality many people adapt quite well to it, as the brain is often able to perceive a "clear picture" at all distances.

Most surgeons recommend a trial of monovision using contact lenses before an actual laser treatment is used to create monovision, as some people aren't able to adapt to monovision as well as others.
