In 1986, Charles Munnerlyn, Ph.D., Terry Clapham, and ophthalmologist Steven Trokel, M.D. of Columbia University formed VISX Inc. to explore the possibility of correcting human vision with the excimer laser.
Over the years, VISX technology has advanced significantly.
The original VISX Star was FDA approved in 1996 and replaced by the Star S2 in 1998. The S2 featured new hardware, software, and lighting; but the crucial improvement to the system was a smoother laser beam profile, which led to better outcomes.
In 2000, VISX introduced the Star S3 ActiveTrak. It featured an infrared camera system to track small eye movements during treatment. Accurate tracking is important, because it helps assure that each laser pulse is placed in exactly the right location.
In May 2003, the FDA approved VISX CustomVue laser vision correction. Through wavefront technology, CustomVue sets a new standard for vision correction, with the potential to enable better vision than glasses or contact lenses, even at night. As the only laser able to deliver CustomVue treatments, the Star S4 ActiveTrak is the current flagship model of the VISX line.
